In Bremen, history comes alive-the 800th stumbling block was laid at Arndtstraße 2 today! This special memorial stone is a symbol for the Jewish family Ter Berg, the victim of the Nazi regime. Bremen Senator Özlem ünsal has sponsored this important stone. Stumbling blocks that have been laid in Bremen for two decades stand for the remembering of the terrible crimes of the National Socialists.
The Ter Berg family once lived on Calvinstrasse and was part of Bremen's history. Elias and Mathilde, who got married in 1922 and had daughter Jenny, had to move to a "Jewish house" in 1940. The family's deportation to the Ghetto Minsk on November 18, 1941 is tragic. The research show that they either succumbed to the inhuman conditions or fell into one of the mass murder actions that began in 1942. Christa Rödel from the initiative group stumbling blocks Bremen explains that this depressing story was reconstructed from archive sources.
engraved memories and critical voices
The Stumbling Stone project was launched by the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig in 1995 and now comprises around 100,000 stones in many cities and countries. Despite the important commemoration, there are also critical voices, such as that of the President of the Israelite Culture Community in Munich, Charlotte Knobloch. She expressed concerns that the stones that lie on the floor are stepped back with feet and leave the victims without protection. However, the initiative group considers the relocation to be a significant possibility: by placing it in public space, homeowners cannot prevent the memorial stones.
in Bremen alone, according to the State Center for Political Education, over 1,500 people have become victims of tyranny. The painful reality of these memories causes Bremen citizens to pause and to commemorate the dark past.
