Citizens' attorney causes excitement: Allotment gardens in Guntramsdorf threaten to disappear!

The planned redesign of the allotment gardens on Oceanstrasse in Guntramsdorf causes heated discussions. On Saturday, the ORF format "Citizens' Attorney" was discussed on the concerns of the allotment gardeners under the moderation of Peter Resetarits. As Meinverzirk reported, the existing gardens that have been lovingly maintained in the coming year are to be picked up for new, to create legal allotments. This redesign is based on a rental agreement from 1946, which describes the original use of the area, whereby many of the existing huts have not been properly approved.

The new allotments should have standardized sizes between 150 and 350 m² and are equipped with basic supply connections, including water, sewer, broadband drives and electricity. The expected costs for the redesign amount to around 250,000 euros, which, according to Hannes Winkler, chairman of the Lower Austria allotment garden association, should be borne by the new home. The changes to be expected in particular excited the minds of the old tenants, since many trees that do not fit into the new concept have to be felled. A tree examination showed that about 10 % of the trees are in poor condition, which leads to further concerns. "A clinical garden is not what the allotment gardeners want," said Johann Oswald, an existing tenant.

new perspectives for allotment gardeners

The problems associated with the entry into allotment care are diverse. Not all new tenants have gardening knowledge, which can lead to failures in particular in the early days, as National Geographic . Nevertheless, there is support in organized allotment garden in the form of specialist consultations and training for the tenants. The ecological and natural approach in garden maintenance is not only permitted, but is also promoted. The associations offer numerous opportunities to expand the knowledge and skills of allotment gardeners, and want to ensure that new tenants will be familiarized with ecological principles right from the start.

With a new demand for the 40 new plots that have now arisen, there are already around 60 interested parties, while existing tenants and new applicants are in a tense competition for the new gardens. The redesign could not only change the way of life of the current gardeners, but also offer new opportunities and challenges for future generations of allotment gardeners.
