Penguin statue in Gröpelingen: Artwork has to move!

Bürgermeister-Koschnik-Platz, 28237 Bremen, Deutschland - In Bremen-Gröpelingen, an unexpected penguin statue of the artist Mohamed Smith caused a sensation. But the joy of the work of art did not last long: the Bremen Office for Roads and Traffic decided to reduce the statue and temporarily store it. The reason? Safety concerns! The statue could allegedly endanger traffic safety on the Mayor-Koschnik-Platz. The artwork will be removed on Tuesday.

The bronze sculpture was set up without official approval almost two weeks ago to commemorate the Gezi protests in Turkey in 2013. At that time, CNN Türk showed a penguin documentary instead of the protest pictures, which made the penguin a symbol of resistance. Now the statue, known as "Bremer Banksy", should not simply disappear. Bremen is already looking for a new location where the statue can be set up "safely and accessible to the public". There is hope that she will remain in Gröpelingen.

a new home for the penguin

The city administration is working on giving the penguin a new home so that it can soon be seen again in public. The decision to reduce the statue makes mixed reactions, but those responsible agree: security is going on! The penguin, which is a sign of the protest for many, could soon be in a new, safer place. The search for the perfect place has already started!
