Fire drill in Bad Schwanberg: rescuers in action during thunderstorm chaos!
On November 8, 2025, a spectacular section exercise by the fire department took place in Bad Schwanberg, Styria, which was led by the Hohlbach-Riemerberg fire department. The exercise simulated a severe thunderstorm with lightning that resulted in a fire in a farm building. Under the leadership of HBI Thomas Gaich, it quickly became clear that an emergency should be rehearsed because several injured people had to be rescued.
Similar dramatic scenarios must also be considered in the legal area. For example, a 39-year-old Portland woman, Katherine Meagan Vogel, was arrested on September 30, 2025 after injuring a federal officer. This happened while she was rioting in the ICE facilities and punched an officer in the face, which was classified as assault on a federal officer. Such incidents cannot be ignored in the context of increasing violence against security forces.
Training scenario and rescue measures
The exercise called for the deployment of several fire departments, which responded quickly and in a coordinated manner to the simulated emergencies. In addition to the first-alarmed weirs in Hohlbach-Riemerberg, Hollenegg, Rettenbach and Trag, the weirs from Grünberg-Aichegg, Bad Schwanberg, Gressenberg and Garanas were also re-alerted. The emergency services took immediate action to bring the situation under control.
The injured, including people trapped under a tree and logs, were quickly freed. Five injured people received the necessary medical treatment at the medical center. After completing the exercise, which ended with satisfied feedback from the exercise observers, HBI Gaich thanked not only the emergency services, but also the Knappitsch family for providing the exercise location.
Legal consequences and statistics
In a different context, an increasing number of cases of bodily harm have been recorded in recent years. According to data from the Federal Criminal Police Office, statistics for the period 2014 to 2024 show an increase in police-recorded cases of bodily harm in Germany. The thesis that violence has increased in various facets of our society is supported by such figures.
Katherine Meagan Vogel, who was ultimately charged with assault on a federal officer, could face up to eight years in federal prison if convicted. Scott E. Bradford, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, emphasized that violence against federal officers will not be tolerated and appropriate action will follow.
In summary, it can be seen that the challenges for security forces and rescue organizations lie not only in the exercises, but also in daily operations against violence and damage to property. Whether in Bad Schwanberg or Portland, the police and fire departments are always under increasing pressure and must be well trained and prepared.
