Hedgehog in need: How to help and avoid serious mistakes!
In the idyllic Prignitz it is an annual drama: hedgehog in need! Andrea Löblich from the association "Wild Animal in Need" is there when desperate animal lovers call - and that often happens! A young bird of prey last week that caught in the radiator grille of a car was only the latest case. But this autumn, the animal rights activists are experiencing another worrying phenomenon: the overpopulation of Igeln. "Unfortunately, the calls come too late!" Smoked Lölich. These stitched creatures are often not up to fate because finders often do a lot wrong.
hedgehogs are always brought in a critical condition, for example because they have received incorrect food. "Many do not know that apples and other types of fruit are taboo for hedgehogs!" Warns Löliche. Instead, it is cat food and living insects that can help the small pinging animals. The care of Igeln takes over and her colleague Rosi Gersheimer from Gerdshagen - their goal: to make the animals strong enough again to survive winter.
Not every hedgehog actually needs help
But not every hedgehog is helpless in the bushes! "If the hedgehog is lively and active, you should leave it alone better," explains Löble. But of course there are also the weak specimens that urgently need support. "Under 500 grams of body weight, you have no chance without human help," confirms Gersheimer. The first supply is important: if the hedgehog has been cooled or he rolled up, immediate help is required! A warm towel or a heat pillow can work wonders here.
The widespread errors are no less dangerous about hedgehog fleas-supposedly a plague are not worried: these parasites are not very dangerous. But the falsely treating with anti-parasite means can have fatal consequences: his deadly poisoning is often the result. Anyone who meets a hedgehog should contact the next hedgehog care center after the first aid. In Gerdshagen, the association "Wild Animal in Need" is ready to secure the survival of the little guys! Andrea Löblich can be reached on 0162/60 26 761 - a call can save the life of a hedgehog!
