Popular Grace Hopper comprehensive school exceeds expectations in Teltow!

In the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark, the change of over 1,500 pupils to secondary schools took place after the summer vacation. The popularity of the Grace Hopper Comprehensive School in Teltow, which was the first choice of 233 students, was particularly striking, but only had 116 places available. This shows the urgency and the desire of many parents and students according to modern and well -equipped educational institutions.

The Grace Hopper comprehensive school currently has 661 students and is therefore one of the largest of its kind in the region. Another plus point of the school is the new location with a modern new building that opened this school year. The school is equipped with digital media, each child receives a rental tablet on which school books are also available digitally. This corresponds to the current educational claims and promotes technical learning.

The high schools also enjoy high demand. The Vicco-von-Bülow-Gymnasium in Stahnsdorf was mentioned by 171 students as a first desire, with 136 of them received a place. The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium in Teltow was also popular with the students: 118 pupils gave the school here as a first desire, and 108 were recorded. Another worth mentioning high school is the Wolkenberg-Gymnasium in Michendorf, which was able to fulfill 94 out of 101 first wishes.

A total of 762 pupils wanted to switch to a high school in public sponsorship. Only 24 students saw their first desire to be unfulfilled because they were housed at an upper or comprehensive school. Among them were 15 pupils who could not prove suitability for the high school.

The popularity of high schools is also reflected in the number of places offered. It is interesting, however, that you still have no precise figures about students who have switched to schools in free sponsorship or who have selected outside the district and have selected a secondary school there. This information is apparently hidden from the Ministry of Education.

School recording and the selection procedures

The procedure for the allocation of school places in Brandenburg takes place via the Ü7 procedure, in which parents state their first and second wishes at the end of primary school. In order to get a place at a high school, the students must demonstrate their suitability through a primary school report and their grades from the half -year certificates in mathematics, German and a foreign language. A grade average of no more than seven in these subjects automatically qualifies them for a high school.

For pupils who lie in the grade area below this threshold, there is the possibility to take part in a trial lessons carried out by a commission. The final decision on the recording makes the school management. If the registrations exceed the available places, a selection process will be initiated.

In addition, the popularity of high schools in the district shows that this form of training is also in demand by many students. At the high schools, the elementary and high school Carl von Ossietzky in Werder led the list, followed by the Solar secondary school in Beelitz.

Overall, the current trend shows that the demand for secondary schools in Potsdam-Mittelmark is growing, as the wishes of the pupils and their parents are reflected in the registrations for the school year 2023/24. Education is a central topic and the choice of school plays an important role in the future of young people in the region. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming years.
