Grandma against the right: Exhibition is reminiscent of victims of right violence in Achim
In Achim there is a remarkable initiative that campaigns for democratic values and right -wing violence. The group "Grandma's against Right", led by Renate Witzel-Diekmann and Sophia Kemlein, has decided to bring a hiking exhibition on the subject of right-wing violence to Achim. This decision is made at a time when the political landscapes in Germany, especially in the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, are challenging. The AfD has achieved almost 30 percent of the votes there, which triggered concern with the initiators.
"That was a bit of a downer," Kemlein comments on the election results. Nevertheless, the award with the Aachen Peace Prize motivates the women to continue to get involved. The exchange with other groups, such as the youth initiative for clarifying the wars in the former Yugoslavia, shows them that it is important to stay active together. "Waiting and watching it is depressed," she adds.
The motivation of the "Grandmas against Right"
The concerns of the Achim group are clearly formulated. The drive is the fear of the accusation of not doing anything. "We have lived in prosperity and democracy by everyone," says Kemlein. It is therefore essential for the group to set signs. Especially the upcoming tour of Martin Sellner, the head of the identity movement, through Northern Germany, women do not make women idle. They plan to show their opinion openly in order to take a stand against the growing right movement.
"We are more", was the motto of the Germany -wide protests against the right at the beginning of the year. These movements give women the feeling of being on the right path. The maintenance of parliamentary democracy is strengthened by their commitment. Witzel-Diekmann, who was active in Bremen right from the start, remembers the beginnings: "It was difficult to find fellow campaigners here in Achim, but the response grew after an event of the Bremen group." Today the initiative has around 15 committed members, including some “grandpas”. It is emphasized that it is irrelevant to be biologically a grandma - the attitude is decisive.
The project of the hiking exhibition
The most recent project of the "Grandmas Against Right" is the hiking exhibition of the Wabe alliance, which deals with the victims of right -wing violence in Lower Saxony after 1990. "Eleven people were recorded, of which only two are recognized as victims of right -wing violence," explains Kemlein. This illustrates how important it is for the initiative to draw attention to this topic.
The exhibition "Remembering Meaning Meaning" will be shown in the Achimer town hall from October 14th to 26th. In advance, the women will provide information about the project on October 2 and October 12th on the weekly market. The opening of the exhibition will take place on October 14th and will include a kick -off event with Lucius Teidelbaum. A final highlight will be a theater performance on October 27th in the Kulturhaus Alter Schützenhof.
The award with the Achimer honorary award 2023 is another sign of recognizing their work for Witzel-Diekmann and Kemlein. "Politics sees us as an enrichment," says Witzel-Diekmann. The commitment of the "grandma's against right" is therefore not only perceived locally, but also nationally - an aspect that is of great importance in these turbulent times.
