Brandenburg's state parliament is constituted: seating and explorations!

On Thursday, October 17th, the constituent meeting of the Brandenburg state parliament is on the agenda. The preparations are already in full swing. According to Daniel Keller, the SPD parliamentary group leader, everyone involved is trying to bring the meeting smoothly. The meeting will begin under the direction of the President of the Age Reinhard Simon, a 73-year-old member of BSW. Simon will open the meeting and will surely create the conditions for an orderly session.

The election of a new president of the state parliament is on the agenda. It is already rumored whether the current president Ulrike Liedtke will be proposed again by the SPD for election. This decision is expected to be announced by the SPD parliamentary group at the beginning of the coming week. Keller said positively about the work of Liedtke: "She has represented our state of Brandenburg and also MPs very well."

seating and vice president

A controversial point in the discussions is the number and choice of vice presidents. The Presidium will meet again on Monday to discuss it. The AfD parliamentary group in particular raises claims for a Vice President. Keller reported that a procedural decision on the number of these items had to be made before a choice of Vice President. The constitution stipulates that a Vice President should be elected from the opposition, and a by -election is possible when government formation is completed. However, the SPD faction considers more than two vice presidents to be superfluous.

While the seating arrangement in the plenum has already been determined, there is agreement that the BSW faction will sit on the far left, followed by the SPD and CDU in the middle. The AfD will be placed on the far right. This agreement could help to define the conditions in the state parliament more clearly, which is important for future work.

constructive conversations between the SPD and BSW

The explorations between the SPD and the alliance Sahra Wagenknecht continue and seem to be promising. Robert Crumbach, the BSW head of the state, spoke of "very good conversations", whereas Keller described the conversations as "harmonious and constructive". Both parties seem to pursue a common goal: to build a stable government. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the negotiations will develop.

Keller also emphasized that no further details can be published due to a confidentiality agreement regarding the content of the talks. However, it is certain that the subsequent discussions are determined and the parties hope for a successful agreement.

The composition of the new state parliament is determined by the results of the state election on September 22, 2024, in which the SPD received 30.9 percent of the vote, followed by the AfD with 29.2 percent, the BSW with 13.5 percent and the CDU with 12.1 percent. This results in 32 seats for the SPD, 30 for the AfD, 14 for the BSW and 12 for the CDU.

For the Greens, who received only 4.1 percent of the vote in the election and will therefore not be represented in the new state parliament, there are major structural changes. The party leadership has announced that they are rethinking internal structures and communication processes and plans a comprehensive error analysis. Regional conferences and a party congress in November are planned in Cottbus, where the party structures are to be examined critically.

The upcoming session of the state parliament promises to become an exciting event, especially with regard to the upcoming elections and the negotiations on a possible coalition. The focus will also be on the future orientation of the Greens.
