EAL is a fish of the year 2025: A look back at his trip to Brandenburg!
Finowkanal, Deutschland - The eel, once the king of European waters, did it: it was voted "Fish of 2025"! But reality is dark. This delicious delicacy, which used to be used as chicken food, is fighting for survival. The eel is threatened with extinction, and not without reason. The Situation in Brandenburg is particularly worrying because the eel population drops dramatically. Manfred Melack, a fisherman with over 30 years of experience, reports from a decline in his catch of 400-500 kilograms to a measly 200 kilograms this year. An alarming sign!
The trip of the eels begins in the Sargasose lake, where they slip as larvae and go on an incredible 6,000 km journey through the Atlantic. But on their way into fresh water they are dealing with many dangers: dams, waterworks and even poachers add the eels. These are caught and sold to Asia for high prices. The numbers are frightening! On the coasts of the North Sea, only 0.6 percent of the glass hall was recorded in 2021 compared to the 1960s. In Brandenburg the eel deficiency has long been noticeable and the fishermen are concerned.
alarming inventory
The situation is so serious that the eel now needs special attention. The German Fishing Association and other organizations have taken the initiative to strengthen the eel stock through stocking measures. As part of these efforts, 2.5 million glass halls have already been used in the Spree and the Spremberger reservoir. But the question remains: will this be enough to save the way? Experts such as Uwe Brämick, head of the Institute for Inland Fisheries, warn of the challenges that the eel must overcome on its way to Brandenburg waters.
The eels live in the domestic waters for up to 20 years before they go on their last trip back to the sea to reproduce. But the threats they encounter are numerous and diverse. It remains to be seen whether the measures to increase the eel stock will be fruited or whether we will soon have to mourn this fascinating fish.
