Jan Buck's masterpieces: Sorbian art meets the modernity in Senftenberg Castle
In the district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz, the Lausitz art collection has opened a new exhibition that is dedicated to the outstanding Sorbian painter Jan Buck. Buck is one of the most important representatives of Sorbian art in the 20th century and was known for leaving traditional folkloric motifs behind and devoting themselves to modern art. This exhibition is also an extensive series that took place in several museums across borders on the occasion of its 100th birthday in 2022.
The exhibition, which has been seen in Senftenberg Castle since this week, presents works from the own inventory of the art collection and 13 loans from the Sorbian Museum of Bautzen. It will be open until January 5, 2025. The focus is particularly on the color -intensive still lifes and landscapes of Buck’s, which reflect his style and artistic development over the years.
Jan Buck: A life for art
Jan Buck was born in Nebelschütz in 1923 and partly spent his studies in Wrocław, where the post -war years shaped his art sustainably. Due to its close connection to the Polish art scene, Buck developed a unique style, which finally made him known in the art landscape of the GDR. In the 1970s he had made a name for himself and advocated renewing Sorbian art. He was convinced that modern present could only be presented with contemporary forms of expression and intellectual discourse.
After the political turn in 1989, new design options opened up for Buck, and he created a remarkable late work that was characterized by unbroken creative creative power. He himself saw his artistic responsibility to combine Sorben and turns with modern art, which is clearly expressed in his late works.
At the moment, visitors to Senftenberg Castle can not only enjoy the visual splendor of Bucks works, but also get an insight into his life story and his artistic development. The exhibition is not only a tribute to an outstanding artist, but also an enrichment for the cultural landscape of the region.
The Lausitz art collection has set itself the task of preserving Jan Bucks's significant heritage and also bringing closer to a broader public. The opening times of the exhibition are daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and then after a special schedule until the turn of the year.
