Former children's home in Zehdenick will be new accommodation for refugees

In Zehdenick in Brandenburg, the former children's home at the brick factory will be used as shared accommodation for refugees in the future. This decision was announced in a recent meeting of the district council, chaired by District Administrator Alexander Tönnies (SPD). The district strives for a quick implementation, since the municipality urgently needs space for additional refugees.

Currently living in the district of Oberhavel around 1570 people in shared accommodation. So far, 357 new refugees have been added in the current year. In view of the obligations of the State of Brandenburg, the Oberhavel committed to recording almost 1600 refugees, it becomes clear that the district faces a challenge. District Administrator Tönnies said that the recordingoll could not be fulfilled.

Expansion of accommodation and improvement of the connection

The plans provide that up to 100 refugee people should be accommodated in the now repaired building. The district administrator expressed itself positively about this development, especially against the background that a air -air hall can be avoided as a temporary solution. The conversion of the former children's home should be completed by the planned opening in the middle of next year. This should not only offer people who have fled their home country, but also improve a place to live, but also improve the public transport connection of the area.

Tönnies emphasized that the local staff will be responsible for social support and security services in order to offer the refugees the necessary help.

In addition, the city of Zehdenick has also assured its support in relation to the integration of newcomers. The deputy mayor Marco Kalmutzke mentioned that the city wants to encourage the refugees to learn the German language and actively participate in working life.

Long search for a location

The search for suitable locations to accommodate refugee people in Zehdenick was difficult. Social director Tobias Berger reported that the district carefully examined various options. The idea of setting up a license hall was only considered the last option. The new solution with the children's home was rated as positive.

In addition, an information event for the citizens of Zehdenick will take place on November 14th at 6 p.m. in the Exin secondary school. The event should give the citizens the opportunity to find out about the renovation measures and the integration of the refugees and to ask questions.

The district administrator also announced that community accommodation should also be set up in other places, such as in the former Hotel Preußischer Hof in Bischofswerder or Marwitz. These measures are part of a larger plan to cope with the problem of accommodation.

Finally, a resident noted that it is important to take into account the history of the former children's home. Reiner Merker recalled that the building was previously used as a prisoner during the GDR dictatorship and that the past should play a role in the nine use of the building.

Overall, the situation in Zehdenick shows the constant effort to accommodate refugees and at the same time respect historical requirements. Despite the difficulties, the city strives to find a solution for everyone involved. Further information can be found in an article at www.maz-online.de
