Brandenburg introduces warning signs against wolves - security or panic?
Gusow, Deutschland - In Brandenburg it gets serious: warning signs that indicate possible encounters with wolves will soon be set up! A novelty that not only causes excitement, but also has an eye on the safety of the residents. The initiative comes after an incident in which a wolf has torn a deer in the village of Gusow. Robert Schulz, the wolf representative of the Seelow-Land Office, explains: "It is remarkable that such a shy animal is looking for closeness to human settlements." The signs with the inscription "Attention, wolf area" are a first step to sensitize the population.
signs should increase security
A total of eight signs are to be installed on main paths around a forest area in November. Brandenburg is known for its high wolf population, and Schulz emphasizes that the signs should not lead to panic. Rather, it is about minimizing potential risks for public security. "The reactions to the initiative are mostly positive," said Schulz. Nevertheless, there are concerns: "One or the other may no longer dare to go into the forest." A wolf pack has been living in the region for several years and is causing discussions about the security of the citizens.
The debate about wolves near settlements is not new. Again and again it is asked whether these animals could lose their fear of people and thus become a threat. According to the Federal Environment Ministry, direct encounters between wolf and humans are rare. Nevertheless, it is inevitable that the animals occasionally roam through populated areas. While the wolves in Germany are strictly protected, it is politically discussed whether the protection status should be relaxed, especially in the case of problematic animals that attack grazing animals.
