Panketal green town hall: A step against climate change!

The municipality of Panketal, located in Brandenburg, starts an ambitious project to improve the environment and promote climate protection. A central element of this project is the greening of the town hall facade, which should not only upgrade the cityscape, but also wants to contribute to the sensitization of citizens for sustainable practices.

Since September, preparations for the greening of the facade have been underway. The company Schwedter Landschaftsbau was commissioned to install a concrete cistern near the bicycle stands on the town hall forecourt in Zepernick. This cistern becomes part of an irrigation system that is used for the vertical greening of the facade and for a swamp oak on the forecourt. It is the first cistern for rainwater use on a public building in Panketal, in which up to three cubic meters of water can be saved.

Details of the project

The aim of this greening campaign is to ecologically upgrade the strongly sealed forecourt and thus make a contribution to adapting to climate change in urban rooms. The actual planting is planned for a later date because it depends on the seasonal conditions. The decision to green the facade was unanimously caught in August 2021 as part of the climate protection measures. According to the first cost estimates and subsequent discussions, the planning was revised. Instead of an elaborate "plant wall" that needed a lot of water, those responsible have now decided to green vertical greening with fewer water -intensive climbing plants that grows on rank grilles. These adjustments led to a significant reduction in project costs.

The total amount of the project amounts to around 133,000 euros, with 90% of the costs being promoted to climate change by a federal program to adapt urban rooms. Mayor Maximilian Wonke explained that the town hall is frequented by many citizens every day and that the green facade greening should serve as a practical example of climate adaptation. He emphasized: "The community wants to go ahead with a good example and motivate you to green more house walls."

The measure is in the context of larger climate protection strategies of the municipality and is part of the efforts to increase the quality of life of the citizens. By taking these steps, the community shows that even small changes in the area can have significant effects on the climate.
