Winter chaos in northern Hesse: black ice and snow provide accidents!

In North Hesse, the German Weather Service (DWD) warns on January 5, 2025 of "Markant Slowing" until late afternoon. The circles concerned are the southern district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg, the southern Schwalm-Eder-Kreis, the Vogelsbergkreis and the district of Fulda. Frost and light snowfall are expected throughout Hesse until Sunday morning. In addition, stormy conditions in Northern Hesse are announced until Monday morning, January 6th, with wind gusts of up to 60 km/h and in exposed locations up to 65 km/h.

The weather also brings continuous rain in the Marburg-Biedenkopf and Waldeck-Frankenberg districts, which is supposed to continue until Monday at 6 a.m. The DWD recommends avoiding unnecessary stays outdoors and trips. Particular caution is required for air travelers at Frankfurt Airport, as failures and delays have to be expected. On Sunday, temperatures between -1 and -5 degrees with freezing rain are predicted, and it is also advised not to stop in forests and under power lines.

increased risk of accidents by smoothness

The dangers of the smooth underground lead to a increasing number of traffic accidents in large parts of Germany. The DWD warns of smooth roads and increased risk of accidents for Saturday and Sunday. Especially in the federal states of Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia, Hamburg and Bremen, the weather-related traffic accidents increased. Around 80 smoothly accidents were reported within a few hours in Bremen.

Particularly serious incidents occurred on the A1 near Sittensen, where hundreds of trout died in a black ice accident and four people were injured. In the area of the Braunschweig police in Lower Saxony, over 110 traffic accidents occurred in just eight hours. There were several accidents in the Stade district in which at least five people were slightly injured. Also in Thuringia and in Bavarian Sonnefeld, where a car crashed into a house wall, there were injuries to the occupants.

In addition, BER Airport in Berlin was affected by the weather conditions: from Friday evening no landings were no longer approved, and 30 flights failed until Saturday afternoon, while 17 departures were painted. Travelers at Frankfurt Airport should expect further restrictions on Sunday, especially in the morning, which is why they are asked to plan more time to arrive and check the flight status regularly.
