Hydrogen firing boot: Berlin relies on green innovation!
The Berlin fire brigade goes into a new era: On March 12, 2025, the starting signal for the groundbreaking research project "Navish2" was given. Together with the Technical University of Berlin, an innovative, hydrogen -powered extinguishing boat is developed, which not only reflects technical innovations, but should also make a decisive contribution to climate protection. At the kick-off event at Schiffbauerdamm, the project partners explained that the feasibility study will last from December 2024 to November 2026. The project is generously supported by the Berlin program for sustainable development 2 (Bene 2) from the European Fund for Regional Development (ERDRE) and the state of Berlin. Dr. Karsten Homrighausen, state fire director, made it clear that the conversion of the Berlin fire brigade's vehicle fleet not only a question of the future, but also a question of the "when and how", as fireworld.at reported.
sustainability in focus
The hydrogen project "Navish2" demonstrates the engagement of the Berlin fire brigade for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. At the event, political representatives such as State Secretary Christian Hochgrebe and State Secretary Britta Behrendt were also present, who found out about the progress. Germany wants to become greenhouse gas -neutral by 2045, and organizations with security tasks are required to make their share in emission reduction. Currently, the majority of the emergency vehicles of authorities and organizations with security tasks (BOS) are still operated with fossil fuels, so that sustainable energy systems are urgently needed to meet future requirements, such as
The "Navish2" project primarily wants to show how advanced drive technologies can help reduce emissions and to meet the special requirements for disaster resistance. The idea is to create a technically sophisticated concept, on the basis of which the world's first hydrogen -powered fire extinguishing boat can be realized. This could not only revolutionize the fleet of the Berlin fire brigade, but also serve as a model for other cities that want to switch to environmentally friendly solutions.
