Under Murder: A look behind the prison walls in Berlin!
Under Murder: A look behind the prison walls in Berlin!
In a discussion of prison life, the new podcast series "Unter Meldern - Life in Prison" will start from October 22, 2024. Produced by the Berlin-Brandenburg Rundfunk (RBB) in cooperation with the Tagesspiegel, the eight-part series offers deep insights behind the walls of the Tegel correctional facility in Berlin. The Podcast series in this regard is presented by RBB presenter Teresa Sickert and Tagesspiegel author Katja Füchsel, who were intensively in contact with four occupants of the JVA Tegel for a year and a half.
The Podcast series is special because it addresses the often opaque and complex facets of life behind bars. The listeners follow the stories of convicts who were taken to prison for terrible offenses. Among the protagonists are Thomas Rung, once known as Berlin's most dangerous serial killer, and Leon Bikowsky, who murdered his own father at the age of only 22. The stories not only address the murders and crimes, but also the emotional and psychological constitution of the prisoners during their detention.
Insight into hectic prison research
In a total of eight episodes, it is discussed how prisoners develop over a long period of time. Topics such as loneliness, hope and grief come to life in the conversations. Katja Füchsel's reports reveal how different prisoners deal with their past and whether they can get involved with their fellow prisoners. What happens to people who spend decades in prison? Can these criminals become better people behind bars?
In this podcast, this is answered by the perspectives of inmates and employees of the correctional facility. The judicial officers bring an additional voice into the discussion, report the challenges in the context of re -socialization and the difficulties associated with reintegration into society. This creates a multifaceted picture of detention that goes beyond the simple assumptions that the general public often has.
One of the memorable topics of the first two episodes will be the question of how mental illnesses and past offenses affect the existence of the prisoners. In particular, the discussion about Thomas Rung, who deals with his remorse, and Leon Bikowsky, who made life difficult for himself in his prison period, will remember the audience. In addition, there is the lifelong experience of "lummi" Kubisch, which has been in custody for over 25 years and now, at the age of 75, hopes for freedom.
The energy of the podcast is reinforced by the combination of storytelling and analytical studio talks. Katja Füchsel shares her experiences directly from prison, while Teresa seeps into the studio together with her deepens and analyzes the topics. Together, the two journalists not only bring specialist knowledge in the field of true crime, but also a human perspective on the often taboo topic of re -socialization.
