Security for children: Vienna needs more social workers in public space!

The security of children and adolescents in public space plays an increasingly central role in the political discussion. Ömer Öztas, youth spokesman for the Viennese Greens, emphasizes the urgent need to invest more in youth work and to increase the presence of social workers: inside. According to the current figures on the feeling of security of this age group, it can be seen that children and adolescents are often unsettled, especially in delicate situations or in confusing places such as parks or underpasses. Öztas therefore calls for an increased responsibility of the city of Vienna to create offers that offer perspectives for young people and solve conflicts without violence (ots.at).

Niki Kunrath, the security spokesman for the Greens in Vienna, highlights the importance of the police. In their opinion, the police should act in areas where the need for security is highest. "The training of policeman: inside is crucial in order to develop a better awareness of dealing with children and young people and thus avoid conflicts," explains Kunrath. This initiative is part of a larger approach that is also pursued in Berlin. As part of the Inersiki project, ten methods were developed to take into account the security needs of children and adolescents in urban design. These methods are practice -oriented and offer cities concrete approaches to improve security in public space by involving the perspective of children and adolescents, as the German Institute for Urban Studies reported (difu.de).

The need to take the security needs seriously seriously is emphasized on both sides. This is not just a local policy topic, but a social responsibility that numerous actors: inside from different areas, from the police to urban planning to social institutions. The effective implementation of these measures could lead to an improvement in the feeling of security in the long term and thus to a higher quality of life for children and adolescents in public space.
