Return of the Nefertiti: 21,000 votes for return to Egypt!

Neues Museum, Berlin, Deutschland - For over a century she fascinates the world - the bust of the Nefertiti is the pride of the Egyptian museum in Berlin! But her stay in Germany is now on the brink. In a new online petition, initiated by the renowned archaeologist Zahi Hawass, the return of this masterpiece of sculpture is required to Egypt. Almost 21,000 supporters gathered behind the claim on October 18!

petition with swing!

The bust, which has conquered the hearts of art lovers and those interested in history in 1912, is considered "illegal" in Germany. Hawass, the former general secretary of the Egyptian antiquities, emphasizes that this return would not only be an act of justice, but is also based on international agreements to protect the cultural heritage. He appeals directly to the Minister of Culture Claudia Roth and the Prussian cultural property foundation. "The aim of this petition is to start a dialogue and to receive a worthy answer from the German authorities," explains Hawass in passionate words.

The debate is bubbling!

The controversy over the bust are not new. Shortly after their arrival in Germany, there were first return demands from Egypt, which go back to 1924. Historian Sebastian Conrad emphasizes that the imperialist conditions at that time and the unequal distribution of power are decisive for the discussion about the Nefertiti. While the Prussian Culture Foundation emphasizes the lawful transfer of the bust, the question of moral responsibility remains in the room: does the masterpiece really belong to Berlin?

An exciting conflict between cultural heritage and moral claim, which not only affects the fate of the Nefertiti, but also the future cooperation between the nations in the area of the cultural heritage!
