Tree protection in Berlin: Term for exceptional permits 2024

The district office Reinickendorf in Berlin has made an important announcement that affects all property owners. By the beginning of November 2024 at the latest, applications for exemptions in accordance with the tree protection regulation must be submitted. This measure is intended to ensure that applications can be processed before the end of the felling period on February 28, 2025.

Under the tree protection regulation, all deciduous trees in Berlin are under special protection if they have reached a certain scope of the trunk. Fruit trees such as the walnut and the Turkish tree hazel are excluded from this protection. Any work or planned felling on protected trees must be applied for in advance to the district and nature conservation office of the district.

It is important to take the protection of animals into account in the trees when working on trees. A seasonal ban applies from March 1st to September 30th, to fell trees or hedges or to cut back strongly.

Applications must contain the number of trees affected, the tree species, the scope of the trunk and the reason for the application. A site plan with the marked tree location and information on the property owner must also be submitted.

There are measures that can be carried out without an exemption, such as the removal of dead wood and damaged branches. Further details can be found in paragraph 4 paragraph 4 of the tree protection regulation.
