In Germany, autumn is traditionally the time when many children deal with colds and other diseases. This is often a challenge for parents, especially if they are at work at the same time. The child's health benefit offers financial support here if parents cannot work because of their sick children. But who actually claims and what regulations are there? Two experts answered the most important questions.

The child -suffering benefit is a remuneration rate for the statutory health insurance companies and comes into force when parents suffer due to their child's disease. In most cases, child sickness benefit amounts to 90 percent of the caring parent's net income. With certain one -off payments, such as the Christmas bonus, it can even be up to 100 percent.

A central point is that only legally insured are entitled to child health benefit. "Only those who are insured themselves with the right to sick pay can also receive child -suffering fees," explains Petra Heinevetter from independent patient consulting Germany. In addition, the child must also be legally insured. Unfortunately, privately insured parents go away empty -handed here. Special regulations apply to civil servants who are usually entitled to special leave.

The child must also be younger than twelve years. However, there is no age limit for children with disabilities or those who are dependent on help. It is also interesting that not only biological parents, but also adoptive parents, boots, foster parents and grandparents can claim childage benefit if they are mainly responsible for the care of the sick child.

A claim for childhood benefit only exists if there is actually a loss of earnings due to the care. "It must always be ensured that no other person in the household can take care of the care," added Heineevetter. Be it because the child has to be picked up from the daycare center at short notice or the pediatrician issues a certificate of the disease - proof is imperative.

A highlight of the new regulations is that when a child is admitted to an inpatient admission, the supervising parent is entitled to child health benefit. This applies to the entire period of participation. In children under the age of nine, no special reason is necessary, while older children have to prove a medical necessity.

In addition, there are limits for the days on which child health benefit can be claimed. For the years 2024 and 2025, parents can claim up to 15 working days per legally insured child. Single parents have the right to apply for up to 30 days per child. In several children, the claim for each parent is a maximum of 35 days a year, for single parents up to 70 days. An exception applies to seriously ill children who have no time limitation for the claim.

In the world of work, it can lead to tensions if parents fail at short notice because of their children's illness. However, it is important to communicate openly how the situation is. Nancy Meckert, consultant on the compatibility of work and family, recommends looking for dialogue with colleagues and showing understanding for the different situations.
