Demolition of the Wollankstraße Bridge: Traffic collapse inevitable!
Demolition of the Wollankstraße Bridge: Traffic collapse inevitable!
A dramatic event is imminent: the demolition of the over 100-year-old railway bridge on Wollankstrasse in Berlin-Pankow will soon become a reality! Deutsche Bahn will start work from the end of November, and the effects on traffic are huge. Wollankstraße will be completely closed until the turn of the year, which will lead to massive traffic jams on already loaded detour routes such as Breite Straße and Bornholmer Straße.
The planning is intense: According to a spokesman for the Deutsche Bahn, the final traffic management is currently being worked out. However, these traffic jams are only the tip of the iceberg: Wollankstraße is said to be accessible again in 2025 before a new closure is waiting for road users. The member of the Bundestag Stefan Gelbhaar from the Greens demands more information for the citizens in order to keep the inconvenience as short as possible.
Future -oriented new construction of the bridge
The initiative aims to make the train route of Deutsche Bahn future -proof! As part of an infrastructure project worth 46 million euros, the old bridge is demolished and replaced by a modern new building. Four new bridges will also be created to optimize the Zugstrasse and also set up noise protection walls to reduce sound emissions. Critical voices of residential initiatives regarding planned tree felling have already become loud.
commuter must adapt to restrictions on the S-Bahn lines S1 and S25: Partial and full closures are inevitable during the construction work. The S-Bahn stop on Wollankstrasse, which will be suspended from March 2025 to August 2028, is particularly affected. This forces commuters to switch to the Schönholz S-Bahn station-another factor that contributes to the inconvenience on site.
This massive construction site on Wollankstrasse is part of a larger plan of Deutsche Bahn for urban traffic, which also includes other new construction projects on three other bridges in North Berlin. But the exact schedule and the effects on traffic remain unclear to date - the tension is increasing!
