EHEC alarm in Berlin: rising cases paralyze the city, health in danger!

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports alarming numbers: 127 EHEC cases have already been registered in Berlin by mid-October this year! For comparison: There were only 98 cases throughout 2023. In 2022 there were only 64 diseases. The increase in the capital is worrying and even exceeds the figures from the last year of Corona 2019 when 94 cases were reported.

The affected districts are alarming: 21 cases in Neukölln, 17 in middle and 13 in Pankow. Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Tempelhof-Schöneberg also recorded 12 cases. In July there was a major outbreak with 15 cases, with Neukölln particularly affected. In an incident, even a child from a daycare center in Zehlendorf!

in Brandenburg it does not look better: 98 EHEC cases have already been reported here this year, an increase compared to 89 cases in 2023. 6 new illnesses were registered there, especially in the second week of July-the situation is critical!

The dark danger of EHEC

The infection is part of a greater nationwide event that is connected to a seminar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at the end of June, in which around 130 people took part. The main sources of infection are faeces of ruminants. The horror is increased by the potentially deadly complications, such as hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), for which two cases have already been reported in Berlin and one in Brandenburg.

An infected person from Berlin did not survive the worst episodes last year - a terrible loss. The time has come to exercise even more caution! The RKI calls for children in particular in contact with animals and to consider the highest hygiene when preparing foods.
