New life on Alexanderplatz: Galeria becomes a cultural and enjoyment center!

An exciting new chapter for Alexanderplatz in Berlin-Mitte! The conversion of the Galeria building will not only change the face of the square, but also revolutionize the cultural and gastronomic offer. Commerz Real, the owner of the building, plans an exciting mix of culture, gastronomy and trade, which is supposed to transform Alexanderplatz into a living center. The central and state library (ZLB) could play a central role here and significantly increase the number of visitors.

The plans are ambitious: by the end of 2025, the Galeria department store should temporarily close in order to be able to shine in new splendor from 2026. The current structure of the building no longer meets the modern requirements, and the construction work on the adjacent high -rise is continued on schedule. The vision not only includes a sustainable retail solution, but also gastronomic offers on the roof of the converted building, which should enrich the experience on Alexanderplatz.

integration of culture and gastronomy

The conversations between Commerz Real, Galeria and the Berlin Senate are already in full swing. Gerd Johannsen, spokesman for Commerz Real, emphasizes the importance of a sustainable solution that is not only at short notice, but also for the next 20 years. The integration of the ZLB could sustainably improve the atmosphere at Alexanderplatz and positively influence the visitor structure. The plans of the cultural senator Joe Chialo to integrate the ZLB into a central downtown real estate, move with it within reach.

The redesign of Alexanderplatz is part of a comprehensive vision that is supposed to link the space more to the surrounding cultural offer. Initial considerations of expanding the ZLB offer to the space are considered promising. While retail on Alexanderplatz is still strongly represented, the innovative usage concept of Commerz Real could lead the place to a new era that unites culture, work and shopping in a unique way.
