Merz 'threats: attack on the sovereignty of small EU countries!

Slowakei, Land - On June 3, 2025, EU MP Petra Steger from the FPÖ critically commented on the latest threats of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz in relation to smaller EU countries. Steger described Merz 'statements as "attack on national sovereignty", especially in view of judges that are put under pressure and possible financial sanctions by the EU Parliament or breach of contract, a deviation from the specified EU sanction line should be considered. According to Steger, this is an attempt to oppress the oppression, which is increasingly spreading in the EU's current political climate. This is a dangerous development that promotes an authoritarian orientation within the Union that is reminiscent of centralistic compulsory systems.

Steger further explained that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who recently emphasized that Slovakia was "not a school boy", resisted this pressure. It supported Fico's approach, national self -determination and democratic diversity to defend the pressure from Berlin and Brussels. This attitude is becoming more and more resistance, especially if sovereign states such as Hungary and Slovakia are prompted to demand peaceful solutions in the Ukraine conflict.

The policy of Slovakia in the spotlight

In a larger political context, the criticism of the EU also comes from the Slovak opposition, which Prime Minister Robert Fico accuses of wanting to lead Slovakia from the EU. Fico was supposed to face a vote in parliament on a Tuesday, but this was canceled due to a protest of the opposition. Michal Šimečka, the chairman of the Slovak Progress Party, announced that the vote was again criticized after FICOS procedure not to keep the session publicly.

fico, who recently tightened his anti-Ukrainian rhetoric, is increasingly skeptical about NATO and the EU, which fulfills the expectation of a possible leakage from Slovakia from the Union. In doing so, he could have the upcoming European crisis scenarios in mind, including the possible breakage of the block itself. Critics warn that such statements could affect the national interests of Slovakia.

individual states in the area of tension of the EU

The discourse on sovereignty and national interests are becoming increasingly relevant in the current political landscape of the EU. According to an analysis by Dr. Eckhard Lübkemeier from the SWP shows that the legal power of independent states in reality is strongly shaped by unequal power conditions. These conditions are also a challenge, especially with regard to the desire for European sovereignty, which always seems to be threatened by the different interests of the member states.

The need to create a strong and sovereign European area is in the top priority, but is difficult by geopolitical rivalries and the dependence on protection on external powers, such as the USA. The delegates decided to set up European sovereignty in Versailles in Versailles, but it remains a demanding task, since security deficits and lack of their own skills are always important.

The current situation illustrates how important it is for European countries to make joint efforts to strengthen their sovereignty and to manage the challenges of globalization. The events in Slovakia and the reactions to the positioning of Germany and other countries within the EU seem to influence a lot and be of fundamental importance in the near future.
