Merz changes opinion: rape in marriage finally punishable?
Berlin, Deutschland - Berlin - A dramatic change of opinion in politics! Friedrich Merz, the Union Chancellor candidate, has rethought his attitude towards rape in marriage. In a sensational interview with the newspapers of the new Berlin editorial company as well as the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten”, the CDU politician explained: “I would vote differently today”. This statement comes after his controversial decision of 1997 when he voted against a draft law that was supposed to include rape in marriage to the Criminal Code.
Merz defended his position at the time by emphasizing that rape in marriage was already punishable as a coercion and serious bodily harm. "I never voted against the criminal liability of rape in the marriage," said Merz. He had pleaded for a contradiction clause that would have made it possible for the victim to reject law enforcement. «I voted for such a solution over 25 years ago. Even around half of the Union faction saw it as I did, »he added and admitted that others who decided differently had“ right ”if you looked at things in retrospect.
political ambitions and debt brake
But Merz doesn't just have the past in view! He also commented on the debt brake and was ready to discuss reforms at the country level. «But in the list of priorities there is such a consideration for me in the last place. We are on the debt brake, »he emphasized. Merz is determined to move into the Bundestag for the Hochsauerland in the new election on February 23. The CDU there coordinates its direct candidate on Saturday.
