Maul and claw disease: 88 million euros loss for Lower Austria!

In a few days, the strict protective measures for containing the mouth and claw disease (MKS) in Lower Austria will be lifted. There are currently no cases of MKS in Austria, and the authorities have implemented comprehensive pension and hygiene measures. Nevertheless, a study by the University of Krems shows the possible serious effects of an outbreak in the Region.

Such an outbreak could lead to temporary supply gaps and marketing stops. According to the analysis, the economic damage could be up to 88 million euros. Dr. Markus Scharner, head of study, emphasizes that animal health is of crucial importance for security of supply. "Pork keeping is particularly sensitive because the degree of self -sufficiency in pork is just above the need," explains Scharner.

effects on animal husbandry

Air -ordered leg would be affected by around 117,000 animals, including 41,000 cattle and 76,000 pigs. This would not only have an impact on the farmers concerned, but also on the entire food supply in the region. LH deputy Stephan Pernkopf emphasizes that a healthy animal population is essential for the Lower Austria location.

In neighboring Germany, a case of MKS was recently found in water buffalos, the first outbreak since 1988. This incident led to the restricted zones and a ban on transport for animals and their products. Despite strict measures in Brandenburg and Berlin, no further cases were reported, and Germany received the status "MKS-Free without vaccination" on April 14, 2025 from the World Organization for Animal Health.

continuous vigilance required

The risk of an outbreak of MKS remains real. The disease is highly contagious, but not dangerous for humans. However, it can have serious effects on animal health and international trade, which illustrates the need for protective measures. In the EU, the countries are responsible for combating animal diseases, and cooperation with international organizations plays a crucial role.

The MKS remains an issue that alarmed farmers and authorities, especially in view of the current reports on outbreaks in Hungary and the Slovak Republic. It is now important for the Austrian farmers to consistently follow the contamination measures and to pay attention to potential risks.
