Revolutionary literary honored: New plaque for Irmtraud Morgner
On October 18, 2024, a new plaque for the writer Irmtraud Morgner will be unveiled in front of the house Am Tierpark 52 in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde. District Mayor Martin Schaefer will take part in the ceremony at 4 p.m. Irmtraud Morgner lived and worked in this house from 1980 until her death in 1990.
The writer became known for her fantastic-realistic spelling, especially in her “witch novels”, who took a critical look at the gender roles. Her literary work was highly valued in East and West and emphasized the "rigorous female point of view" in the literature.
The memorial event is led by the literary scholar and women's researcher Sabine Krusen, who will give an insight into the work of Irmtraud Morgner. The event is accompanied by Cathrin Pfeifer with the accordion.
IRMTRAUD Morgner posthumously received the "Literature Prize for Grotesque Humor" and was buried in the central cemetery of Berlin-Friedrichsfelde. Helga Lieser took over the design of the commemorative plaque from Exhibition Design Graphics Berlin, financed by the means of the Lichtenberg fund for memory culture with the support of the housing association Howoge.
This ceremony serves to honor and continue to honor the legacy and the important contribution by Irmtraud Morgner to the German literary scene. The plaque thus becomes a place of memory and recognition for its important work and its influence on the literature landscape.
