Art message from Ukraine: Gems conquer Berlin!
The Berlin Gemäldegalerie will present a remarkable special exhibition from January 24, 2025, which shows 60 rescued paintings from the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in Odesa, Ukraine. This exhibition is entitled "From Odesa to Berlin. European painting from the 16th to 19th centuries" and is a cooperation project, funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, such as sueddeutsche.de reported.
The exhibition is the result of a transmission project that has brought important works of the Odesa Museum to safety in recent years. These works of art include works by well -known European painters such as Andreas Achenbach, Francesco Granacci, Frans Hals and Bernardo Strozzi. There are 25 other paintings from the Berlin collections in dialogue with these works.
planned events and objectives
The first presentations of this collection took place in spring 2024 to make the Ukrainian collection known to a wider audience. Dagmar Hirschfelder, director of the Gemäldegalerie, reported a great response to this opening. The aim of the extensive special exhibition is to present the works from the Odesa Museum to a broad audience and to emphasize the historical connections of Ukraine to Western Europe. The exhibition is divided into nine chapters and begins with an introduction to the project and its contemporary context, such as added.
The saved works that came to Berlin in September 2023 were carefully processed by restorers. Entry to the special exhibition is free of charge for Ukrainian citizens, and the exhibition texts are offered in German, English and Ukrainian. Following the exhibition in Berlin, another presentation of the works in Heidelberg is planned, while a return to Odesa is planned for the war situation.
