Climate activist Lilli Gomez: prison sentence for rage campaign on Sylt!
In the current judicial affair around the climate activist Lilli Gomez from the Helmstedt district, the debate about climate protection is fueled again. The 24-year-old, known as the "Klima-Lilli", was sentenced to a seven-month prison sentence on December 6th. This hard step follows a campaign in the summer of 2023, in which activists of the "last generation" illegally entered the Sylt airport site and sprayed a private jet with color, which caused considerable damage of at least one million euros, such as the News 38 reported. The court saw no emergency that would have justified the actions of the activists and emphasized that there were alternative means of protest.
Lilli Gomez is now one of the most prominent representatives of the climate movement in Germany, who repeatedly gets into the court fire. Regardless of her conviction, she said during a trial in Berlin that she would like to continue to take part in the “last generation” actions. This was done during a hearing on new allegations for coercion and property damage, in which she blocked a motorway and sprayed a Christmas tree in a shopping mall. During the procedure, she made emotionally and warned of the catastrophic consequences of climate change. "We play with human life", says Gomez, according to FOCUS .
The "last generation" faces internal conflicts that could endanger their future. The Austrian offshoot has recently dissolved and in Germany there is also disagreement about how the protest is to be continued. While some activists advocate further adhesive campaigns, others are calling for a more emotional address to the population. So the group not only sees itself exposed to external pressure, but also internal differences, while the fight for climate protection continues.
