Fight for memories: The legacy inspires in the Josefstadt!

Theater in der Josefstadt, Wien, Österreich - On March 15, theater visitors in the Josefstadt experience the highly expected premiere of "Das Legastnis", a production of the American dramatist Matthew López. This impressive play, which is in the tradition of Tony Kushner's "Engel in America", addresses the life of gay men over three generations in New York City, during the transition period between Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Director Elmar Goerden emphasizes that the exciting narrative and the profound examination of historical and political issues directly affect the audience.

In "The Legacy", the devastating AIDS crisis of the 1980s is dealt with, which strongly shaped the LGBTQ community. Goerden emphasizes that the narrative perspectives of his actors, only one of whom have noticed the experiences at the time, play a major role. Nevertheless, the ensemble with its line -up of eleven men and only one striking female role is well equipped to bring the 25 characters to life. As the Residenztheater-Website , the story of the play can be understood in parallel to social reality, in which minority rights are increasingly at risk.

a passionate staging

The representations in the play are direct and genuine, which Goerden considers particularly important to receive an honest reaction from the audience. While such content does not hide any risks in larger cities such as Berlin or Munich, the performance in Vienna is a different challenge. "We show gay life in all its facets, and if that means that you sometimes go under the belt line, it is so," explains Goerden.

In addition, the staging leaves time for deeper emotional insights and encounters with the past. The theater group spent four months not only to understand the characters, but also to create an atmosphere in which all actors can fully live out their emotions. This process -oriented approach is actively discussed during rehearsals in order to map the diversity of human experiences and to persuade the audience to think about the topics that not only affect the past, but also the present.
