Cheers in Berlin: Syrian celebrate the fall of dictator Assad!

On Sunday, December 8, 2024, there were great celebrations in Berlin after the Syrian rebels announced the fall of the dictator Bashar al-Assad. Thousands of Syrians gathered on Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg, where the police counted around 5,000 celebrations. The atmosphere was cheerful, while numerous participants waved Syrian flags and spoke choirs such as "Freedom for Syria". This meeting developed from a solidarity rally originally registered for 400 people, which quickly grew up and a happy move to the Oberbaumbrücke. According to Tagesspiegel even danced people with drums and dancing, while some fire works bodies threw, however, the police were prohibited.

Also in other parts of Berlin, such as Neukölln, the celebrations were noticeable. The Sonnenallee became a gathering point for numerous people on Saturday evening who took the street to express their joy. Around 100 people gathered at Hermannplatz who drew attention to themselves with posters and the slogans "Free Syria". On Sunday, the Zeit that autocorsos formed in the area and also loudly cheered for the events in Syria at Moritzplatz and other Berlin districts. Meanwhile, the fighter of the Miliz Hajat Tahrir al-Sham explained that he had taken control of Damascus and reported a withdrawal of government troops.

The joy of the news from Syria was clearly felt by the Syrians living in Berlin. Many are looking for lost relatives, while at the same time hoping for a positive turn for their home country. The events not only electrified Berlin, but also addressed many Syrians nationwide, who held similar celebrations in other German cities.
