Lufthansa in the crisis: Is the solution to Munich's chaos?

In an interesting turn of events, the perspectives on Berlin Brandenburg (BER) and Lufthansa could change soon. Markus Söder, the Bavarian Prime Minister, has recently made fewer mocking comments about the airport, perhaps because he is currently dealing with the challenges at Munich Airport. The Munich Airport has received the less flattering title as the "worst airport in Europe" by Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr.

Lufthansa currently does not seem to have a functioning hub in Germany, since Frankfurt Airport is also negatively eyed due to persistent problems, even referring to it as a “juggernance of the Main”. This situation raises the question of whether the airline may consider BER. Finally, the BER recently received the title of the most popular airport in Europe, which is confirmed by the Eurochase survey.

The reaction of politics and the airport company

The ruling mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, was recently asked what he thinks about the idea of establishing the BER as an important hub. His answer is promising: "The BER works. And we are working together to work even better. Berlin as the birthplace of Lufthansa is ready to talks at any time." This positive attitude could be the key to creating more flight connections via Berlin and positioning the airport as an attractive international hub.

A spokesman for the airport company (FBB) also showed willingness to talk. Axel Schmidt, the spokesman for FBB boss Aletta von Massenbach, told the checkpoint: "The BER basically has the structural prerequisites and the capacities to operate as a hub. However, this depends on whether an airport wants to use Berlin Brandenburg."

It remains exciting whether Lufthansa will decide to include more in its route network. In view of the challenges at the existing airports, this step could bring advantages for both sides. A closer cooperation between the airline and the BER could help to serve travelers better and to alleviate the existing problems at other airports.
