Caution, pickpockets! How to protect your valuables in Berlin
Berlin, Deutschland - in Berlin there is a red - red! Topping thieves are up to mischief in the city and it is becoming increasingly dangerous to leave the valuables unattended. Overcrowded places such as Alexanderplatz or the Kottbusser Tor are not the only hotspots for long fingers. Criminal director Lothar Spielmann warns that calm locations, such as restaurants or cafes, can also become a trap. "Pocket theft is a craft," he explains and emphasizes that the perpetrators cleverly use distractions to strike.
The Berlin police have their hands full, not only with big events, but also through the many small thefts that piling up every day. To protect yourself, Spielmann gives an important tip: "Pack your valuables into the inside lockable bags of outer clothing." So it is made much more difficult for the thieves to get to the prey. But be careful: the tricks of the Langfinger are as diverse as brazen! Whether when getting in or out in public transport or when shopping in the supermarket- everywhere lurking.
The tricks of the pickpockets
A particularly popular trick is that a perpetrator creates a distraction by asking for help or showing a city map. While attention is pointed to something else, the cell phone or wallet is quickly removed from the table. Langfinger are also active in busy subway stations where there is a crowd. "The alarm level is red here!" Warns Spielmann urgently.
The best defense against pickpockets? Always have an eye on your own valuables! Never leave your handbag unattended in the shopping cart while looking around the supermarket. The thieves are quick and clever - and often they don't even notice that something was stolen to them. Be vigilant and ask yourself from strangers who are too close, whether you may not exceed a limit. One step back can protect you from a big loss!
