Federal Interior Minister Faeser: Focus on children!

Berlin. An exciting day in the Fröbel Kindergarten Charité Mitte: Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Jörg F. Maas, Managing Director of the Foundation, surprise the little guests with a reading hour! The occasion? The nationwide reading day on November 15, which focuses on the importance of reading.

The atmosphere in kindergarten is electrifying! Adults in suits and cameras gather while the children fill the room with a happy laugh. "No matter who reads, the main thing is that it is read!" Call the little ones full of anticipation. But there is a serious message behind the hustle and bustle: According to a study by the Reading Foundation, many parents read too rarely to their children. Every fifth child has little contact with books. That has to change!

reading day: A call for reading promotion

The initiative, which has been organized by the Reading Foundation, the Deutsche Bahn Foundation and the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” since 2004, is intended to draw attention to the alarming numbers. A 2018 PISA study shows that a fifth of the 15-year difficulties have difficulty understanding texts. In fourth graders, 25 percent do not even reach the minimum standard when reading. An alarming sign for the educational opportunities of our children!

In kindergarten, the problem is directly tackled today: Faeser and Maas read the book "Fuchs and Bär". The children are banned, their eyes shine with enthusiasm. At the end of the reading lesson there is a book of reading mouse for each child: "Our colorful reading stories". A clear appeal to all parents: read your children! Because reading is the key to a successful future!
