Berlin in transition: Gas lanterns disappear - residents are outraged!

Lichtenrade, Berlin, Deutschland - The Berlin transport administration is the focus of a heated dispute! While the city exchanges its old gas lanterns with modern LED lamps as part of an ambitious conversion project, the minds cook up. The measure that is implemented in the south of the capital ensures massive criticism among the residents who vehemently defend the charming gas lights.

In Berlin there are still around 18,300 gas lanterns that are considered less effective. Despite the conversion of 47,000 copies that has already taken place since January 2019, the question remains: Is the exchange really necessary? A spokesman for the transport administration explains that the need for action at all locations with gas lighting is high. As part of an EU-funded project, the historical gas lanterns in the single-family houses of Lichtenrade and Marienfelde will be replaced by autumn next year. "As a rule, the street space after conversion is much better illuminated than before," said the transport administration.

But the residents are anything but enthusiastic! On Reddit, a user expresses his outrage about the loss of the "beautiful historical gas lanterns", which are replaced by "unesthetic LED lamps without a claim to design". He also criticizes that no charging stations were attached to the new lanterns, which in question the efficiency of the conversion. "Why should you also work efficiently?" He asks sarcastic and thus shows the frustration of many citizens about the decision of the transport administration.
