Bunker demolition on the banks of the Nettel Beck: Erfurt creates a new meeting point!
Erfurt, Deutschland - On December 20, 2024, the city of Erfurt made significant progress in the redesign of the banks of the Nettel Beck. After the dismantling work started in November, both the old garages and the former bunker have now been completely demolished. For this project, the city invested around 120,000 euros in its own funds to sustainably upgrade the area. The soil was prepared with modern emotional excavators, while the removed material was recycled and the area was filled with mother earth. In order to compensate for the trees removed by the work, 15 new plantings are already planned, both on the property and in the area. Arne Ott, head of the Department of Building Management, recently said: "The construction fence will stop by the end of January to secure the prepared area." These measures are intended to make the area around the Spielplatz sundial an attractive meeting point for the Erfurt, as reported by the city administration of Erfurt.
civil protection facilities and their history
parallel to these urban planning measures, there is interesting information about the civil protection facilities in Germany. A comprehensive database documents the public civil protection systems built between 1955 and 2007 in the Federal Republic of Germany and Berlin. These protective buildings, often known as "atomic bunkers" or simply "bunker", are historically important because they were an important place of retreat for the population during times of crisis. According to the website Geschichtspuren.de, these bunkers, which are not all included in the database, are specially designed as shelters for the emergency. This documentation offers a great insight into the past and the functionality of such facilities that were developed in uncertain times to give the population security.
The current measures on the banks of the Nettel Beck, supported by the city's garden and cemetery office, show the commitment of the urban administration, both with planned greenery and by upgrading formerly military structures, a positive influence on the cityscape. This makes it clear how the historical context of the civil protection systems forms part of the urban landscape that can develop in the course of modernization and conversion.
