B96 expansion: IHKS urgently call for improvements before choosing!

Neubrandenburg, Deutschland - Six weeks before the Bundestag election, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Neubrandenburg and Potsdam are calling for the urgent expansion of federal road B96. In a joint letter to politics as well as associations and initiatives, the improvement of this north-south axis is considered essential for economic development in the region.

Torsten Haasch, general manager of the IHK Neubrandenburg, emphasizes that the B96 is currently overloaded every day with up to 14,000 vehicles. Bottlenecks and security risks shape the current traffic situation. Also Dr. Christian Herzog, General Manager of IHK Potsdam, calls on the Brandenburg state government to make the expansion a top priority in order to sustainably improve the quality of life and business in the region. In this context, a new information brochure entitled "Expansion of the connection axis B 96 - for a strong economic region" was published, which was sent to political decision -makers to promote the implementation of the projects.

Details on the expansion project

The brochure contains graphics on the necessary expansion measures and the current implementation status. The IHKs expect not only an improvement in commercial traffic, but also a better connection between the northeast German tourism regions. An action alliance called "B96 expansion: not like that!" However, protests against the expansion plans, since the critics argue that 60 percent of the planned expansion should be classified as a new building, which contradicts the idea of climate protection. The alliance calls for a moderate expansion that creates better overtaking options, as well as a redistribution of the saved funds into the rail and cycle path network.

The B96 runs through the federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Berlin and Brandenburg and serves as an important traffic axis, especially for weekend and holiday currents from the greater Berlin to the Baltic Sea. The project "Expansion of the B 96 Neustrelitz - Neubrandenburg" aims to improve the traffic situation in northeastern Germany by making the connection between the Berlin area and the Baltic Sea more attractive.

DEGES (German Unit Fernstrasse Planning and -bau GmbH) was commissioned to expand the section between Neustrelitz and Neubrandenburg. In September 2019, the line confirmation was granted by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with which the planning services of the Deges have been completed and the further processing of the project is now being taken over by the state.
