Austria's gas storage tank filled up: winter without a risk of cold!
Österreich, Land - Austria is faced with a dramatic turning point: The gas deliveries from Russia were abruptly stopped on Saturday morning! The spokeswoman for the energy company OMV, Sylvia Shin, confirmed the delivery stop, which was announced with just twelve hours of warning. But while the alarm bells ring, Chancellor Karl Nehammer assures that the population will not freeze. "Nobody will freeze in winter," he announced on platform X and calmed down the citizens in this critical period.
The reason for this sudden stop? A legal dispute between OMV and the Russian energy giants Gazprom on delivery interruptions. An arbitration court recently granted 230 million euros in damages, which further fueled the situation. Nehammer emphasized that Austria was well prepared and that the gas stores are already 90 percent filled at the beginning of winter. "We don't let ourselves be blackmailed," he said, pointing out that Moscow wanted to put pressure on Austria in the course of the Ukraine War.
alternative gas sources secured
The good news: Austria has found alternative sources of delivery! The country plans to obtain gas from Norway, its own production and in the form of liquid gas via Germany or Italy. This means that Austria can continue to cover its energy requirements despite the shocking delivery stop. The Austrian gas stores are so well filled that they should be enough for a whole year. In Germany, the memory are even filled to over 95 percent, which also stabilizes the situation.
