Sweet things on the advance: Starnberger spend the most!

Rhein-Kreis Neuss, Deutschland - In 2024, the buying behavior of the Germans changed fundamentally! For the first time, the expenses for confectionery are increasing to the top of the food expenses and thus overtaking the long-term dominating sausage products. According to a current survey by the market research company NIQ, the Germans spend an average of 245 euros per capit to sweet delicacies such as chocolate and gummy bears, which corresponds to a remarkable increase of 13 percent compared to the previous year. This leads to total expenses of over 20.7 billion euros for confectionery trade, such as Investment Week reported.

The new study on the GfK range of 2024 shows that the proportion of confectionery is now 3.6 percent of the total retail purchasing power, which is 6,770 euros per capita. The purchasing power for confectionery also improved significantly in 2024 with an increase of 13.4 percent compared to the previous year. The regional distribution is particularly striking: in Starnberg, the residents spend the most for sweets with 301 euros, which is 23 percent above the national average. In contrast, the Gelsenkircheners have the lowest purchasing power for confectionery with only 203 euros per capita, so that the Starnberger spend almost 1.5 times for confectionery, such as Magazine reported.

changed consumer needs

These impressive developments are a direct expression of changed consumer needs. Experts attribute the increase primarily to the increased consumer prices, especially at cocoa. In addition, the extended range of vegan confectionery is increasingly appreciated. While the sausage products fall back to second place with 235 euros per capita, dairy products and eggs move into the top three with 213 euros per capita. The numbers reflect the changes in the nutritional behavior of the Germans, which increasingly switch to vegetarian, vegan or flexitarian ways of life. These upheavals in the food market continue to move consumer society and inspire the food trade.
