Würzburg compensates abuse victims from the 60s and 70s!

The city of Würzburg has dared to take a brave step! In a recent meeting, the city council decided to grant the victims of abuse in youth facilities of the 1960s and 1970s. This decision marks a turning point, because the city assumes the moral responsibility for the deeds of the then youth welfare office, which accommodated children in institutions, where they suffered terrible physical and psychological abuse and sexual abuse.

a sign of justice

Mayor Christian Schuchardt (CDU) emphasizes the importance of this measure: "Würzburg is the first Bavarian city to pay financial achievements to those affected to recognize the experienced mental and physical suffering." This happens to offer the victims a piece of justice and support for far too long in the shade. Payments are made without recognizing a legal obligation, which underlines the moral dimension of this decision.

A total of nine affected people who credibly reported on their experiences of violence in the Würzburg youth facilities should benefit from this regulation. The incidents include physical abuse, sexualized violence and psychological violence. It is shattering to learn that the youth welfare office at the time did not take the known incidents seriously and thus roughly violated the duty of care towards the children. Würzburg thus sets a strong sign of the recognition and support of the victims, who finally get the attention and help they deserve!
