Scheuer withdraws from local politics - disputes in the city council escalated!
The former Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) announced his resignation from the city council of Passau on Tuesday, in which he has been working since 2002. With an urgent Instagram contribution in which he's the words "It is enough!" chose, he made his decision public. This happens only a few months after he resigned his Bundestag mandate in April. According to the CSU's statements, Scheuer wanted to be increasingly involved in local politics after his departure from federal politics and was nominated as one of the auditors.
The roots of his resignation, however, go back to a heated city council meeting. According to reports, there were verbal attacks against Scheuer from two city council members. Holm Putzke, a parliamentary member and professor at the University of Passau, and Karl Synek from the Greens, a retired financial official and children's book author, criticized the former minister. Synek in particular referred to the so-called toll debacle that Scheuer had employed in the past, and expressed concerns that his role as an auditor was incompatible with it.
The conflict in the city council
In the meeting there was a scandal when the two city council members argued loudly against Scheuer. Synek called him an unsuitable candidate for the role of the auditor and quoted Franz-Josef Strauß to point out the contradictions he perceived in Scheuer's role. Putzke described the nomination as a "bankruptcy declaration" and exposed the absurdity of the situation in which Scheuer is said to be responsible for the financial examinations, while he is associated with a financial failure.
Nevertheless, Scheuer was not unimpressed. He confronted the local politicians and accused them of acting undemocratically and leading a personal campaign against him. In his opinion, the attacks would have no place in a democratic discussion. While the session was initially heated, it was finally interrupted by another member of the city council who declared the debate.
public reaction and criticism of media
On Tuesday, a detailed contribution by Scheuer followed in response to events on Instagram, in which he expressed his outrage over the shocking incidents in the city council and at the same time criticized the media. He made it clear that respect and appreciation in the political discussion are important to him. In his opinion, however, it is impossible in the current situation to continue to work in the city council after such a "undemocratic behavior" was shown in the meeting on October 7th.
The allegations of Scheuer that the city council colleagues had staged a "broken game" and were rejected by Putzke. He made it clear that he only wanted to support his party colleagues in his criticism. In addition to the non -factional and green voices against him, Scheuer also expressed his displeasure on the reporting of the "Passauer Neue Presse" and the Bavarian Radio, which in his opinion was unfair and hurtful. He accused the media of establishing an inadmissible connection between federal and local politics and thus making himself a "stirrup holder of malice".
For a final explanation, Scheuer pointed out that he had endured a lot of praise and a lot of criticism in his career. After the events, however, he made it clear that the negative reporting on himself and the situation as an auditor is no longer wearable. With this decision, the Passau city council is repeatedly looking for a new auditor after Scheuer was recently appointed for this post. The unrest around his person and the heated arguments seem to continue to shape the political landscape in Passau.
