Ulm/Neu-Ulm relies on the future: 46 new electric buses by 2027!
Ulm, Deutschland - The municipal transport companies in Ulm and Neu-Ulm have decided to massively change their fleet. By 2027, 46 modern electric buses will be procured, an important measure that should not only improve air quality, but also reduce the sound level in the city. This decision was made by the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU) and means that more than half of the city buses are operated emission-free. This is an important step towards environmentally friendly mobility in the region.
The purchase of the new electric buses is part of a more comprehensive plan that goes hand in hand with the entry into force of the new local transport plan of the SWU. This plan provides to improve the transport offers and introduce additional bus lines. "By 2027 we will provide the new buses and make sure that we can offer modern and reliable traffic services," explains Ralf Gummersbach, the managing director of SWU Verkehr.
The financial resources for this project are considerable, with an investment volume of around 34.6 million euros only for the buses themselves. Since the costs for the emission -free drives are significantly higher than for conventional diesel vehicles, the municipal utilities rely on grants. While the federal government has largely suspended the promotion of electrical lines, the SWU rely on financial support from Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.
funding and infrastructure
In addition to the costs for the buses, higher investments are also required for the necessary charging infrastructure. These costs are expected to increase to around ten million euros for the SWU's own share according to grants. The implementation takes place in several phases, which should ensure the future -proof operation of the electric buses.
RALF Gummersbach emphasizes the advantages of the new electric buses: "With the decision for the 46 electric buses, we make a significant contribution to CO₂ reduction in city traffic. Public transport is further improved by the use of modern technologies and emission-free drive." This not only signals a step in the right direction for environmental protection, but also an improvement in the quality of life for the citizens, since the buses are not only emission -free, but also work much quieter than conventional vehicles.
The new fleet will expand the existing vehicles, with 60 out of a total of 109 city buses being operated emission -free. This underlines Stadtwerke's strategy to significantly reduce ecological footprint in local public transport and to promote future -proof mobility.
