Scholz and Selenskyj are pushing European unity in Ukraine talks
The unrest around Ukraine and European security architecture reach new dimensions. While the Munich Security Conference was peaked yesterday, US President Donald Trump caused excitement with a surprising call to Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin. Trump spoke about an "immediate" start of negotiations on the future of Ukraine, but without consulting the European partners in advance. This situation alerted many in Europe because there were fears that Ukraine and its allies could remain outside during the conversations. Nevertheless, the US government later made it clear that Kiev should be involved in the negotiations, which also received applause from the political leaders of the security conference.
urgent call to unit
in Munich it became clear that a stronger European defense policy is required. Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that strengthening European skills in a clear time frame must be strengthened. At the same time, the British Prime Minister Keir Strander urged that the European countries should take on a more active role within NATO. Especially after the withdrawal of the Austrian Prime Minister Alexander Schallenberg from the planned meeting in Paris, Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski underlined the need to show the strength and unity of Europe. He had previously spoken of an upcoming meeting in the French capital, which, however, triggered his uncertainty and the lack of confirmation.
At the conference, the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj emphasized that Ukraine also has to include decisions about Ukraine. He spoke out for the creation of a European army and announced that no decisions about Europe should be made without Europeans. The US special representative Keith Kellogg reacted to these claims without naming the role of the European countries. This situation raises questions about the future cooperation between the USA and the NATO countries, especially with regard to the upcoming negotiations on the latest developments.
