Munich in front of Iaa-Krimi: Dispute over the city center fair causes excitement!
The IAA Mobility in Munich faces an uncertain future. According to a current vote by the Economic Committee, the continuation of the mega event has moved closer. The city council members will decide on December 18 on the use of the inner city exhibition areas that are of central importance for the auto industry. Vehicles should continue to be presented on these “Open Spaces” after 2025, although a far -reaching application by the Greens to concentrate the fair on the exhibition center has failed. The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) considers these areas to be essential for the success of the fair, as well as the representatives of the Munich trade fair, which pronounces for the attractiveness of the city center. This topic is particularly explosive, since the city should request an appropriate fee for the use of public space as part of the IAA, instead of the currently small 30 cents per square meter, as was requested by Sebastian Weisenburger, the group leader of the Greens/Rosa list. This is again in detail at the Süddeutsche Zeitung to read.
dispute over the IAA
The IAA Mobility is the largest automotive fair in Germany and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every time. In 2023, 500,000 visitors came, and over 800 companies presented their latest developments in downtown Munich, where symbolic exchange locations such as Marienplatz and the residence were available. But the next IAA appointments, including a planned for September 2025, are under pressure. Critics from the ranks of the Greens warn of a “free advertising space” for large corporations and rely on numerous civil complaints. With an application, you are committed to ensuring that the IAA will take place exclusively on the exhibition center.
The Munich Economic Officer Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) has already announced that it would present the city council a comprehensive program for the IAA from 2027, supported by the words of VDA President Hildegard Müller, who would like to firmly anchor the IAA in Munich. These suggestions encounter resistance: the vote will take place in the coming week and the outcome remains uncertain what could increase the competitiveness of Munich compared to Frankfurt, the former home of the IAA, as in a report by Image is discussed.
