Together for nature: Retzbacher save rare plants and animals!
Benediktusberg, Deutschland - An impressive joint project caused a sensation in Retzbach! Volunteers and refugees have teamed up to maintain the valuable lean grass on Benediktusberg. The vegetation was processed with motor senses, rake and hay forks to secure the habitat of rare plants and animals. This initiative is not only a contribution to nature conservation, but also a strong sign of integration!
Under the technical management of the landscape maintenance association Main-Spessart e.V. (LPV), the volunteers, including refugees from the Ivory Coast, worked on the preservation of biodiversity in the region. The project, which took place from November 4th to 8th, was financially supported by the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection as well as the Bergwaldprojekt e.V. A dozen volunteers traveled from all over Germany to maintain the area after grazing by sheep and goats.

The work included removing poisonous plants such as the golden rain to protect the pasture animals. Reinhard Fritz, the first chairman of the BN Retzbach, emphasized the importance of care: "Without the animals, we have no chance of keeping the area free." The lean slopes are habitat for endangered plant species such as the mountain crown turn and various orchids, which in turn support the domestic insect world. "If the low vegetation is overgrown, the insects also disappear," warned Fritz and underlined the need for human care for biodiversity.
At the end of the project there was an exciting excursion to the Ruine Homburg nature reserve, where the participants could explore the species -rich flora and fauna of the "Ammerfeld". Due to the great success, further nursing campaigns are planned in the coming year, and interested citizens are cordially invited to participate. If you want to learn more about grazing, you can take part in the Stammtisch of the BN Retzbach on November 21. A lecture will bring the importance of grazing closer.
