Technical failure in the B10 tunnel: speed limit remains in place!
In the Barbarossa Tunnel on the B10 near Annweiler, drivers still have to expect a speed limit of 50 km/h. This measure was introduced due to technical deficiencies, in particular a defective fire alarm system. The problems were identified in May when the State Mobility Office (LBM) inspected the tunnel. While the original speed limit was 60 km/h, the speed was initially reduced to 30 km/h before increasing to the current 50 km/h, as rheinpfalz.de reported.
False alarms and delays
The malfunction in the fire alarm system not only led to the speed limit, but also to false alarms that caused significant traffic delays. An example of this was a false alarm on Friday afternoon that was triggered by defective technology suewpress.de explained. Despite these problems, 24-hour monitoring of the tunnel is not affected. A complete replacement of the fire alarm system is planned for late 2024, with the LBM aiming to install the new technology during the next maintenance week in May to avoid further disruptions.
The difficulties in procuring the new fire alarm system have been delayed due to a lack of offers. The LBM has therefore announced that it will start a new tender process to ensure that the necessary safety technology is installed promptly. However, the speed limit of 50 km/h will remain in place until the technical deficiencies are corrected.
