Adventure on Sylt: Nature lovers discover the island of the North Sea!

The famous North Sea island of Sylt recently became the goal of 50 participants in Naturfreunde Kitzingen, led by Barbara Ziegler and Frank Seyfahrt. This trip not only promises impressive landscapes, but also an interesting tour of discovery through nature and culture of this unique island.

The first stop was the BSW dune hotel in Alt Rantum, where the group was housed. Due to the stormy weather the next day, a visit to the Naturwalt Sylt experience center was on the program. Here the participants learned more about the creation of the island, the challenges of storm surges and the important coastal protection in the region. Climate protection also took an important importance in the stories, which particularly impressed nature lovers.

hikes along the coast

In better weather conditions, the hikers went on a discovery tour through the lively streets of Westerland, where the spa promenade could be admired with its characteristic baths. The way back led along the eight -kilometer sandy beach, always with the fascinating view of the rushing sea. Another highlight was the march through nature conservation dunes and heath landscapes in Hörnum, the southernmost tip of the island, where the transition from the country and the sea can be experienced in a unique way.

Also on the program was a comprehensive tour of the island. Here, the participants received interesting insights into the most famous places on the island through a local tour guide. From Hörnum, the route led to Hallig Hooge with a ship, where the group visited the Johanniskirche from the 17th century and visited the historical royal pesel with traditional furniture from the 18th century. The Kampen Kunst- und Kulturpfad, created since 2008, also received special attention, which is dedicated to the most important artists in this region with 32 plaques.

Another impressive experience offered the “Uwedüne” viewing platform. With a height of 52.5 meters, she overlooks the landscape and offers a fantastic view of the neighboring islands and the mainland when the weather is good. The effort to climb the 110 steps was always worth it!

The exploration of the surroundings led the group through the nature reserve and the impressive salt marshes, past picturesque frieze villages with their characteristic thatched houses. These days on Sylt, surrounded by the rushing waves of the North Sea and the unforgettable sunsets, all participants remain as wonderful memories.
