New service hut of the mountain rescue service Mittenwald: dignified missions guaranteed!

A new milestone for the Mittenwald mountain rescue service: The recently inaugurated service provides more dignity and privacy in the missions. So far, the rescuers had to hand over corpse bags under the eyes of onlookers on the soccer field in the Riedboden. This unsightly situation is now a thing of the past. With the new hut, not only the handover of injured and deceased is more dignified, but also optimized the entire operational structure.

"We want the people we cannot get out of the mountains alive," explains on -call director Heinz Pfeffer. The new service provides a terrace with privacy screen for the handover to ambulances or funeral institutes. In addition, there is now a toilet that was urgently needed to avoid unpleasant situations for relatives and emergency services. These improvements are not only important for the mountain rescue men, but also for the relatives of the injured, who are often dependent on support in emotionally tense moments.

optimized operations and logistical advantages

The new hut also brings logistic advantages. Rescue material can now be stored on site, which saves valuable minutes. "Every single minute counts in an alpine emergency," emphasizes Pfeffer. There is also a garage available to safely accommodate equipment in winter inserts. The planning phase for the building began on February 16, 2023, and the construction was carried out on its own without grants. The volunteers did an impressive 3350 hours of work.

The Mittewacht Bergwacht can now look forward to your own parking spaces on the Riedboden, which previously often caused dangerous situations. A tea kitchen ensures warm drinks in cold times and offers a retreat for the rescuers. The crisis intervention team now also has a room for discussions with relatives. "Without the support of many companies and the commitment of our comrades, that would not have been possible," praises Pfeffer his team.
