Young people as a judge: Enlightenment for more media literacy in Neumarkt

In Neumarkt there is currently an impressive week of action under the motto #no handyzer, in which students not only actively participate, but also slip into roles that they confront with the serious topics related to internet and cell phone use. The 13-year-old Adrian, who acts as a prosecutor, and his classmate Titian, who takes up the role of the judge, are the focus of a fictional process that brings closer reality than you think. A relevant social problem is discussed with a total of 450 young people in the eighth classes of the local middle schools: the spread of child pornographic material.

The student body rolls up a special case in which 16-year-old Max M. is accused. He is accused of making intimate videos with his 13-year-old girlfriend and having distributed them. A topic that is often considered much too lightly for young people, which the organizers of this campaign particularly alerted.

use against the lack of injustice awareness

Sebastian Pelkofer from the Nuremberg-Fürth public prosecutor reports on an alarming increase in such incidents. It is particularly worrying that many young people are not aware of the relevance of their actions. Their unsuccessfulness is often favors through the availability of smartphones and social media that make it easy to share content without thinking about the legal consequences. Pelkofer describes that viral stickers that are used in these sensitive contexts are often only perceived as funny or shocking, without the necessary understanding of their punishable nature.

The simulated process serves to sharpen this awareness. The participants not only get to know the legal framework through the role -playing game, but also experience emotionally which serious effects can have such content.

common goal: strengthening media literacy

The approach of this preventive measure is complex. The aim is to promote the media literacy of young people and to clarify them about the risks of cell phone uses. Supported by various institutions, including the Neumarkt police, comprehensive information is offered. A comprehensive information campaign, in which the victim aid Weißer Ring also informs about the dangers of cyber bullying and its consequences, round off the offer.

The support of the prevention week by influencer Marvin Sperber, which has over two million followers on his social media channels, is particularly noteworthy. With his participation in the campaign, he not only offered the students an additional source of motivation, but also brings up the topics of bullying and racism in school lectures. In a small video that received the students after successfully completing all stations, he appeals to the responsibility that goes hand in hand with the use of digital media.

The feedback from the action week is positive and the Neumarkt police are planning to repeat such initiatives regularly in the future. The firm goal remains to strengthen awareness of the risks and responsibility of mobile phone use among young people. The need for such measures is undisputed, especially at a time when digital media have an ever increasing influence on the life of young people.
