New life for old orchards: trees planted for the future!
Monheim, Deutschland - On November 23, 2024, the orchard was in front of the Donau-Ries retirement home in Monheim by the district association for horticulture and state care Donauwörth e. V. planted with new fruit trees. This replacement operation is of great importance, since many of the existing trees have shrunk badly in recent years due to their advanced age. In the course of this, 20 different fruit tree species, including apple varieties such as 'Santana' and 'Red Star Renette' as well as pear and cherry types, were set. This initiative is supported in the course of the Bavarian orchard pact, such as radioschwaben.de
background of the orchards
orchards are traditional habitats that serve both fruit production and cattle farming. However, many fruit trees have been lost due to an increased clearing since the 1970s, which led to a dramatic decline in stocks in parts of Germany. While the old clearing dangers no longer exist, many fruit meadows continue to suffer from economic pressure and conversion to building land. These facts are undermauert The decline is dramatic because many meadows are ecologically valuable and need a variety of animals and plants to thrive.
To protect the remaining fruit trees, there are now various funding programs such as the "surcharge marketing" of orchards that offer the necessary economic incentive. In some regions it is introduced that farmers are better paid for the care of their orchards, which is of enormous importance in view of the number of sponsored stacking trees. This allows the ecological and cultural values of the orchards to be secured in the long term.
